Book Review:
The Last dreamwalker that comes out September 20th the last dreamwalker is the story of Layla Hurley a 20-something artist who was born and raised in the DMV and for those of you
Who don't know what that means it's DC Maryland and Virginia area Layla has always had a very fraught very difficult relationship with her mother and when her mother dies unexpectedly and suddenly Layla is left with all of these conflicting and difficult emotions that she's trying to process
she decides to go visit her estranged aunts in South Carolina partly to reconnect with family but also to kind of come to grips with and hopefully learn more about this woman who ultimately became her mother while she's in South Carolina
she she discovers that not only has she inherited a small Gullah island off the coast of South Carolina but magical powers that have been passed from generation to generation through the Gullah women and that power is the ability to inhabit dreams and manipulate
The people within those dreams and she's still trying to come to terms with all of this craziness she gets caught up in a decades-long feud with a much older much stronger dreamwalker and it threatens to destroy not only her
But her entire family I like to refer to the last dreamwalker as historical fantasy it's basically history steeped in magic the majority of this story takes place in the galagichi corridor
which has its own really incredibly rich history and in itself has a sort of magic about it the goigie islands are a series of over 100 Islands off the Atlantic coast of the United States that extend from Jacksonville North Carolina all the way to Jacksonville Florida and slaves were had been brought from West Africa to inhabit these islands basically to take advantage of their skill in harvesting and growing rice and indigo Indigo and Sea Island cotton
but because of the isolation of these islands they were pretty much left to themselves the only way on or off the island was by boat the islands were malaria they were extraordinarily isolated so for the most part
they were left to their own devices and that isolation led to them being able to cultivate and maintain their own language and music and culture and food and that persisted pretty much into the 1950s in the 1950s Bridges were built started to be built being built from the mainland to the islands and of course once that happened and they were much more easily accessible developers came in and saw
this beautiful Oceanfront pristine ocean from property and started to build golf courses and Resorts and luxury homes some of you may know at least one of those islands and that's known as Hilton Head
so Hilton Head was and is part of the Gully beachy Corridor the last dreamwalker is a story of the history of that place a history of a proud people in a proud Heritage but it's also a history of family and loss and love and persistence so I truly hope that you will patronize your most favorite Indie and or the library and pick up a copy of the last dreamwalker and I hope that you love reading it as much as I loved writing it.
