Book Review:

The Lucky One is an autobiographical novel written by Jessica Payne. The novel tells the tragic story of a World War II U.S. submarine captain and his young son who both died during the war. It is based on Payne's relationship with her late father, Captain Robert Scott Payne, and his father Captain Katsuura, respectively.

In The Lucky One, Payne describes the relationship between the submarine's captain and his son. Her father was Captain Robert Scott Payne, who was the captain of the massive submarine USS Robert S.

Scott during World States War II. The submarine's crew were inspired by Captain Katsuura's son when they wrote the book. They based the main character Joe on Captain Katsuura in their book. This is evident in Joe's dead-heartedness and his inability to connect with others on a personal level.

Both Joe and Captain Katsuura lost their sense of direction at a young age and never recovered from it.

In 1942, when Payne was nine years old, her father received orders to captain a new submarine for the U.S. navy at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii.

A few months later, he died in that submarine when it ran aground on Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean. Aboard this submarine was Payne's father as well as her Uncle Fred and a few other crewmembers from Pearl Harbour; all perished in the depths below sea level when this submerged vessel ran aground on Christmas Island's coral reefs.

Both Joe Katsuura and Captain Katsuura were unable to convey their emotions to others while they were alive due to tragedies they experienced at a young age. Both perished while fighting a losing battle against grief-induced aloofness and inscrutability.

Ultimately, Joe demonstrates how an ordinary person can become extraordinary under certain circumstances- specifically, when he remains devoted to his dying father even though doing so has robbed him of his own life's sense of direction and purpose.
